"Inasmuch as you have done it unto the least of these...you have done it unto me."
Matthew 24:34-45

Is it possible that we could be witnessing the dehumanization of the human race? Has everything and everybody become a matter of "just business"?  The world is bleeding and wounded by the side of the highway in space.  She fell into the hands of a thief who robbed her and despitefully used her.  A "religious" person come by and looked, and walked on the other side of the highway.  Was it really his problem to deal with?  Things had become so bad; should one get involved?  What is "religion" without love?  Jesus had compassion on the multitudes.  What is your power, without love?  What is your miracle, without love?  What is your success story, your perfected doctrine, your understanding of all Bible knowledge--without love?  The Bible itself says that religion without love is "a sounding brass or a tinkling cymbal" (I Cor. 13:1-13).

In other words, your religion is an irritating clanging in the ears of humanity without love.  When did you last give a cup of cold water in any form to help someone struggling in some dark corridor of his soul or a starving child?  Has the coldness of the world around us transferred to those who claim to be the light and hope of the world?  It is written, "That because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold" (Matt.24: 12).  What can turn us away from our coldness, our indifference, our self-sufficiency, selfishness, and self-love?

Perhaps God will isolate you, and you will find yourself also "wounded by the wayside" somewhere in a dark corner of time.  Then you will understand what compassion and love mean and that love has no price tag on it.  We do not need a better verbal understanding of love; we know all the right words.  What we need is a melting of our own hearts, a breaking inside.  Finally only love will speak and minister to this world, just as it spoke from the Cross of Jesus so many years ago.  The world is still shaking from the testimony of His love.  We, too, must come to the cross in our own lives and allow Jesus to break the pride, self, hostility, and carnality.   The cry has come up, "No man cared for my soul."

Indeed, can it be truly said of this generation of Christians that we walked on the other side of the needs of people both physically and spiritually?  Whatever morsel of hope, of testimony, of thoughtfulness of help, or of compassion you have, share it with others.  Be faithful to give out "such as you have".

"Whoever stops or closes his ears to the cry of the POOR; he also shall cry himself, BUT SHALL NOT BE HEARD." (Proverbs 22:9)
